What your IP address says about you
Your public IP address is assigned by your internet provider and is visible to every website you visit. It reveals your provider and a rough location (usually your city), but not your name or street address. Inside your home, devices also have private addresses (like 192.168.1.23) that never leave your router.
Most home connections get a dynamic address that changes from time to time, for example when the router restarts. Many mobile networks share one IPv4 address between thousands of customers (CGNAT), which is why IPv6 is becoming more common.

What is my IP address?
Your public IP address is the address websites see when you connect. It is assigned by your internet provider and shown at the top of this page, along with the provider and approximate location it points to.
Can someone find my exact location from my IP?
No. An IP address usually reveals your city or region and your internet provider, not your street address. Only your provider can link an IP address to a specific customer.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.7 and are running out, so many providers share them between customers. IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8::1 and are plentiful. Most modern connections have both; we show whichever ones you have.
How do I hide my IP address?
